I have a pair of leatherlyke saddle bags on my 1300R with no backrest. Now If I wanted to add a backrest do I have to get new bags or do they make a backrest that will work with the set up I have. When I ordered them they said they are for a bike without a backrest and to make sure you buy a backrest before ordering your bags, I don't know if that means that if you buy bags for no backrest your just out of luck if you ever want to put a backrest on later. My bags are the leatherlyke S-339R.

Catoma,

I have the Leatherlyke 339 saddlebags which I had the dealer install prior to delivering my '05 1800R. They also added the Hondaline passenger back rest with no issues. Later, I added the large Leatherlyke Cruiser Trunk which has the passenger back rest built in. So if you are looking for maximum touring storage with a passenger back rest, you might be interested in going all Leatherlyke.

Jim,

I just ordered a Leartherlyke trunk for My VTX 1300. I have the contemporary bags. Did you mount your trunk right to your luggage rack. If so, do you have any clearance problems with you saddlebags when you open them? Leatherlyke bags sit higher that other bags.
Thanks.

Hiya Rocketman,

Yes, the Leatherlyke trunk mounts directly to your luggage rack. This is a one-installation-fits-all (regardless of make and model of bike/luggage rack) set up from Leatherlyke. There are four bolts and eight pre-drilled holes so you can adjust the truck forward or backward a little as you like. It also comes with a pre-drilled aluminum plate that goes under the luggage rack. In my case, to position it exactly where I wanted, I wound up drilling two holes in the luggage rack while using two open "slots" in the HDL luggage rack pattern. There were no clearance issues for me with the 339 bags. The trunk is a few inches narrower than the clearance between the bags with both sidebag lids open.

No regrets ... I like it a lot. It's large enough to store a full face helmet, gloves, and a lot more. The only negative I can think of, is that the trunk hangs half way off the aluminum support plate. It doesn't cause any problems that I can see, but I would feel better if the support plate extended under the entire trunk. I see no reason why they didn't make the plate 6 inches longer other than to cut costs. I plan to have a longer piece of bilet aluminum cut if I can find a source.

Bags and Bars

According to the LeatherLyke site the S-339R's (same ones I just ordered) will work with or without a Cobra backrest.
If the bags that Buda has are the same as yours. And the web site says that they will fit with a Cobra Backrest. Hummm, The Cobra Backrest uses the two rear bolts on your fender struts and the Honda Deluxe uses the front two bolts for mounting. It may not make a difference but I think I would give the a call before making the purchase. Just a Thought. :D
