I have to hit the reserve tank around 100mi on the odo. At this point I'm not sure how much gas I have used. Everyone talks about a 'properly tuned' engine. I think I've tuned it correctly, but not sure. Did the rejet with my pipes and the A/F is about 2 1/4 out. Idles a 'little' fast when perfectly warm, but I'm afraid if I slow down the idle that when I start her, she'll die because it sounds so slow.....
:hmm2:

Weather conditions, speed ,how full is the tank when you gas up,lots of factors come into play with mpg. I average 130 before going to reserve this is at highway speed 75 mph. in 105 temp.

I routinely hit 170-175 on the odometer before switching.
If you are filling the tank completely that's 25 mpg or less!
What Jet kit did you use?
The idle speed should be 900 rpm when the bike is warmed up. The bike will always idle a little lower when cold, you can just feather the throttle to keep the idle up until it will idle on it's own.

I feel better after seeing your response. The original owner of my 1300R told me he routinely got around 165-175 miles per tank before hitting reserve. He had no windshield on the bike, but that was the first thing I added. He looked like he weighed roughly about 180. I'm about 310. Depending on whether I've used gas at a generic station or a branded station, I'm usually around 130-140 when hitting reserve. I was hoping for around 150 with the differences I listed, but it's still better than my pickup truck any day ! LOL

Just my opinion, mpg,is very misleading from bike to bike.Toped off, avg. 75 mph most of the ride in the wind ,with wind at my back 130 is the best i can do & my wife exact same bike different color gets about the same mpg. Dont see 170 in my future.:nope:

I get 175-180 continually before reserve on my 09r. I'm 5'8' and 180. Bike is totally stock except for Iso grips if that helps.

My 09 1300R when I ride by myself, most of the time I have to switch to reserve about 120 to 130, I get about 30 mpg, when I ride in a group I get about 45 mpg. Stock with windshield.

John, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make my bike get that mileage. :D

I usually hit reserve at 135 average.

i dont know if there would that major of a difference in the Cali bikes, but 100 miles sounds kind of lame! as mentioned, check some of the suggestions.
however, it will vary on a few things, but not that much.

i've got a windshield, weigh 235, have run it at 85 ( i didn't mean it, incase a LEO is reading, know what i mean cuz) my speedometer if off a bit, and have been running against the wind, and the worst i've gotten is 125 before having to hit reserve. i also had some extra weight, once a passenger another time gear! just my $.02

No problem Woody.
I used to get about 35 mpg, even after decapping the airbox and doing the scar mod.

Put in the Factory Pro jet kit, and it makes all the difference (as long as it's tuned right).

I get 42-46 mpg with an equal mix of interstate and Urban Tampa traffic, some rural roads thrown in for good measure. :choppersm

I've never had to switch to reserve yet - the highest I've gone between fillups is 145 miles and it took under 3 gallons at fillup.

I'm 190 and have done the scar mod with the factory jet kit. I have a K&N filter.
I think the carb is tuned properly more or less. Recently, my baffles got blown out of my straight pipes, so there is a lot of back pressure in the pipes. Would any of that matter?

What kind of intake are you running? Noticed you Scar'd it, added a jet kit, and a/f is 2 1/4...

If just aftermarket pipes and K&N in stock air box, all you need is one shim under the stock needle with stock jets...

Maybe if you us some more detailed info we could try to get you some better mpgs

I did the factory stage 3 upgrade kit. Used their needle. I ran the jet that Charlie D suggested. The bike runs great however mileage sucks.
