I’ve checked lots of threads regarding mpg and still haven’t found the problem! I bought my 2002 VTX 1800C about two months ago, and did lots of the maintenance ( oil, coolant, braking fluid, ground fix, battery problem fixed etc) my mpg sucked! I was getting 26-28mpg. I know that jumping from V-Star 650 to a 1800 might’ve made me little or more trigger happy, but finally this weekend I got up to 31mpg after being more careful with my starts, and replacing the air filter (something I should have done sooner, it was really bad) and FPR valve (something I’ve read in the forums ) After all that I’m getting only 31??? I’m thinking there’s something wrong with it, and my friends from my last trip told me they could smell unburnt gas when they were behind me! The bike had a Power Comander3 when I bought it, and so far I haven’t touched it. I’m thinking about removing it and seeing how will that affect the bike? Maybe it doesn’t work right, maybe it got the wrong map? Can anyone point me in the right direction please! Other than that the bike is a beast, and performs really well. Oh yeah, it cuts off power when I really push it in 2-nd gear to maybe 70-80, and also I got popping sound on deceleration, not always but plenty of times. I love the bike and proud to be member of the VTX 1800 “club”

At 70 mph in 2nd gear you are hitting the redline limit (aka the rev limiter). This is not a bug it is a feature :) Remove your spark plugs and see there condition. If you are running real rich, they will be black and sooty. The popping and gurgling on decel can be partly eliminated by doing the pair valve mod with dimpled block off plates. Also check the tightness of the bolts on the exhaust flanges as leaks there can also cause popping.

Low tire pressures lead to drag (resistance). Inflate to 38-40 psi, then check. Make sure the disc pads aren't also dragging you can tell if they get really hot. Finally pull the wheels and check the wheel bearings, and the final drive flange bearing. These have been known to cause wear issues, esp. when not maintained. Normal mpg would be 35-40. A strong right wrist lowers that. Trying to do 70-80 in second gear tells me you do have a strong wrist. Owning one of these tends to do that! The PC3 could be set for power, rather than mileage. It can be disconnected, you might do that and check, then re-connect. Use solder, not the clips. Thats all I got.
