HELLO!

my name is Jeremy, I just moved crosscountry with my 2005 VTX. this is my first bike since I was a kid and riding dirt bikes. Prior to transporting my bike it ran beautifully. I rode it everywhere I could. Well, here I am a month and a half later, I wanted to go take it for a ride in my new location… at first the lights would only come on and it would not turn over. I pulled the battery out, put a new one in, starts beautiful. I noticed when unloading my bike off the trailer that there was 2 hoses hanging down, I was concerned but being a nurse, I’ve not had time to look at it until today. I started her up, she started just fine, went to put her in 1st and as soon as I rolled on the throttle, she sputtered and died… I’m in serious need of help y’all. Like I said, I justmoved to my new area so I don’t have a couple hundred or thousand dollars to put into my bike. Please help me. I really want to become more knowledgeable!

That is hanging down way further than it should. Trace the two hoses hanging down and see where they go.

Ugh, great, that’s not what I wanted to hear… do you think this is something I’ll be able to fix on my own? There is 2 open tubes hanging down, the smaller one and the bigger one. Which one am I concerned for? I’m sorry I feel and sound stupid… I worked on aircraft for the Air Force and then became a medic, so give me a 68 million dollar aircraft I can fix it! Yet, I can’t fix a darn bike :(

Trace both. It should not be that difficult. Take off the seat and the two side covers and you might be able to trace where these dangling tubes go. Whether the fix will be easy or hard depends on what you find but I don't think it will be a big deal.

as Vinish said looks a bit low but that could also be just the picture illusion. Mine looks like it might only be an inch or 2 at the most shorter, but that hose should be there

But should there be more than one hose dangling below the bike? Are there separate tank vent and fuel overflow dangling hoses? Does the coolant reserve tank have an overflow hose?

Yep, the coolant has an overflow, it is just usually tucked up out of sight.

What about a fuel tank overflow? I know there is a fuel tank vent line but is there a second dangling hose for the fuel overflow?

Alright y’all, I traced the lines, and the thin one was for the gas tank like y’all said. However, I still have this little short hose hanging out, I pulled off all my paneling, pulled the choke and it started up just fine, wasn’t until I closed the choke that I again, tried to roll onto the throttle and it was sputtering, backfired and then eventually stopped and died. I’m really unsure of what to do at this point. I’m annoyed and frustrated. 😭. Please see attached pictures.

This is on the fuel line, so I wasn’t sure if I am missing a tube or not. The other two is the undercarriage of the bike

hmm. What vtx do you have? 1300 or 1800? That hose set up looks familiar though I’m no mechanic. Something about turning 3 hoses in one to bypass something to do with the petcock.

I think it’s a vacuum hose. There’s a picture of it in this thread about bypassing the California smog setup. I think you had this done and it came apart. But I’m no mechanic.

I too am a Registered Nurse working in Critical Care for 43 years, just retired. Including Firefighting (Chief) Dive Team and Paramedic started in 1972 when I first step 'legally' entered a burning building. I learned how systems have certain effects on the patient and motorcycles. The vacuum lines start from atop the motor on the right side like stripping veins for a CABG <-- medical for vessels used in the leg for blocked coronaries. All vacuum lines connect together with plastic / nylon fittings including the back of the breather box of the air filter. They all meet as one large and one small at the front of the fuel change valve. The one that is most important is the big one, like a vena cava. The large on controls all vacuum to the fuel system. If it not attached, it will give you fuel you already have but not give you anymore in the tank. The hose on the right side you show has a plastic/nylon T connecter that starts at the back right corner of the fuel tank. The T connector prevents the hose from sucking all fuel in your tank with that metal place it starts there and air ventilate the fuel tank. On a hot day when you fill it to the top when it is cold, it drains the gas rather than any damage to the tank and fuel system. Sounds like your electrical system is working fine. Any VTX that is not fuel injected as I said. Just like humans, follow the systems that are causing the problem. Follow every systems that is involved, you will usually find the problem before you put a toe tag on. I have the repair manual for my 2006 1300R VTX and even found medical tools that helps me fix the VTX that my 8.5 - 9.0 surgial glove hands cannot reach.

I se you are in your picture you are in military. I teach reading all dx ECGs to the last hospital I worked 633RD MDG in the PACU at Joint Base Langley Eustis at the Langley Hospital. I teach the command structor to how it applies to NSR and all Irregular rhythms. I still reach for AHA BLS & ACLS as an Instructor Trainer. Every certification I taught I was the student expect CEN for Emergency Nurses and ASPAN for Pre Post surgical patients.

Regarding the sputtering I recommend pulling the float bowl and checking to see if you have a plugged or obstructed pilot jet. This is a common problem if the bike has been sitting for a while with the float bowl full of fuel. The fuel evaporates leaving crud that clogs the pilot. I've had good results treating fuel with Sea Foam when I store a bike. I don't recall if the carb needs to be removed to remove the float bowl but it's not a big job either way on a VTX.
Regards, Caveman
