Well 3 weeks ago I had my gall bladder taken out. When I went to my doctor's office for a follow up appointment, I was told I am now officially I diabetic
I've been given my medications and told to see a diabetic educator. Gotta love those finger sticks!

Well now what does this have to do with motorcycles you may ask? Well my wife that was so encouraging for me to get a 1800, now says, no new bike until I lose 50 pounds
and keep my sugars under control
. I even have to start going back to the gym!!!
So long to Ronald Mc Donald

It's not the end of the world. My wife just hit her 40th anniversary of being diabetic. And she rides too. And after being married almost 26 years, finger sticks, blood testing, syringes and all the other toys that go along with it are a way of life. I'm sure you're just on oral meds but you still need to be careful.

But here is where you might be able to negotiate...if your wife says you need to lose 50 lbs for the 1800, tell her 25 lbs for the 1300...it just might work.

Oh Wonderful

You will cope fine. I have been riding since 1968 and a diabetic since 1985. It doesn't stop you only makes you more appreciative of what you can do.if you take care of yourself. I just completed the run for the wall (www.rftw.org) southern route as a road guard (completing 3000 miles) and am now in Newport RI then going to Browing Montana then back to Mesa AZ all by motorcycle.
Diabetes is a disease that can be controlled, and life can still be enjoyed --Just take care of yourself !!!!

Actually, you can use the bike as a diet excuss. Remember, when your riding you are not eating. Unlike a car where you can use one hand to steer and one hand to hold that 44oz guzzler or a burrito, a bike is pretty much 2 hands. Plus, I found that when I am on a day ride I eat very little but I drink a lot of water and maybe a power bar. Also, as for working out, you will be out in the garage washing and waxing (wax on wax off) and turning wrenches while modding your bike. For all the money you waste on the gym membership you could be making a bike payment.

+1 Mscales,
You need this bike to loose weight! It's important that you get this bike immediately so you can start taking long rides with only stops for gas and water LOL. See if you can get her to budge.

Don't worry about it nighthawk. I myself am insulin dependent. I have no problems with riding, although if I feel the slightest bit of strange I do not ride until I test my sugar. Keep your head up and you don't have to say good bye to MCDonalds all together. Its about moderation and Carb intake. I am allowed only 5 points a meal. I can still have an order of those mouthwatering french frys with my salad. LOL Good luck and ride safe.

Oh man I tried In & Out one time and it was the worst I had ever eaten. Well it wasnt the worst but if I wanted a cheap knock off of a big mac I could have eaten at the McDonalds across the street and gotten the real thing. :bleh: Needless to say I have not eaten there since:nope: . My wife loves In & Out though. Well she is from California.......:hmm2: .Go figure. LOL

I kind of have to agree with kc, I heard all the hype about In and Out so a few years back the company I work for sent me out to LA and the guys I was working with took me straight there. It was a good burger, but definitely not the best....

Yeah,
My Dr. told me he had seen one other guy over 1000 ,it was in Med. school and a cadever (sp?) .
The funny part was when I was in the class' they want you to attend (nutrician, support group) the nurse kept telling the newbies each week about it, she would say" if Lee was not in such good shape he would have not made it to the hospital"
At the time I weighed about 395....

the incidence of Diabetes increases with increased weight.....soooooo....as you lose weight you may lose the increases in your blood sugar and no longer be on meds for diabetes....or hypertension, or others....weight is a risk factor for many bad medical issues

As a nurse I care for diabetics every day. While it is a very serious disease it can be controlled. You have received some very good advice from other online friends already. Keep a positive attitude, think how much faster that 1800 will be if the total weight is 50 lbs less. Free H/P!!
