Use to be that the 15-50 red cap was fine....now they've switched the formulation, honestly, I don't know.

I run the Amsoil MCF 10W-40, paid around 7.50 / quart shipped to my home.
The mobile MX4T is a good oil, but as you've said, its kinda pricey.

If you're looking to save money, consider the Shell Rotella 5W-40. Cost's less than $15 / gallon. It's a pretty good oil classified as a "Synthetic", but really it is a highly refined conventional oil. Still pretty good though. It wont last as long as the Amsoil or Mobile true synthetics.

IMO - those are the top choices.

Ask over on the VTXOA - there are plenty selling it. Hard to find locally, mostly a mail order deal. Should be able to get it for approx. $90 shipped per case. Post "where can I get Amsoil" on the general board and you'll probably have several replies. Take the best offer.

They also have a dealer locator.

Probably the only thing I dont like about the oil is how it's sold, but, it's a good oil for a good price so I'll deal with the ordering.

Don't put auto motor oil in your motorcycle!! Your bike has a combined sump for the engine and clutch, and bike motor oil doesn't have the extra slippery additives.
I run Mobil One MX4T ( NOT the V-Twin version). I buy it at Walmart for $7.82 a bottle. The Mobil V-twin is 20-50, MX4T is 10-40 which is what the manufacturer says we should use.

pmack,

In short: the reason that you don't want to switch to full synthetic until after the first 2k miles or so is this: full syn is much "slicker" in essence, and leaving "regular" oil in there allows rings seat properly and the engine to break in properly.
