The Princess (my fiancee) loves to ride on the back of the VTX. Unfortunately, I only have the stock foot pegs on the back. She says her feet get very sore when we ride for any length of time. She wears street shoes (cross-trainers, tennis shoes, etc).

I think the discomfort is coming from the fact that her shoes do not provide enough support in the sole and her feet are constantly in a curled position.

I have come up with 2 options and wanted to get everyone's opinion on them.

1. Buy her hard soled hiking boots or motorcycle boots
2. Buy passenger floorboards

Will the boots make a difference? I would rather buy them instead of invested $250 on floorboards. But then again I do not want to buy her boots that will not solve the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks!

IMHO.....Invest in the floorboards if you want her to keep riding with you. She will be much more comfortable and will love them.

I just checked with my passenger, (wife) Michelle. She says you should get her both but make sure she's there for the boot purchase. I switched to floorboards this season and she's much more comfortable now. And isn't that what it's really all about?

I put the Kuryakyn Isowing mini boards on mine thinking they would be better than the pegs, and they are, but still not real comfortable.
I have ordered the Cobra Passenger Floorboards. Should have just done it to start with.

Michelle here:

I agree with getting both. When I rode with Billy, I always wore good boots and never really got sore feet. But we were also looking into floorboards when I got my own bike. I definitely went the most expensive route...:mosh:

if you buy the floorboards first, the discomfort may but all be gone. the boots will add to comfort, she can choose her own practical or girly boots! either way, with her being comfortable, you'll be like Charlie Sheen "WINNING"

Eric if you decide to sell the kury isowing let me know, might be interested in them as I ride with my cousin and my girlfriend. Girlfriend loves the pegs and the cousin wants floorboards so I thought this might be a good solution

Boots first... AGATT (All Gear All The Time). I don't ride anywhere without full gear and make sure my GF wears full gear as well. I know they might not be all that comfortable but it's better to be safe. Also go with protective first, comfort second, looks third. Safety first :) Then get the floor boards second...

Both.

Good boots.... comfort AND safety.

Boards.... comfort.

I've got Cobra swept boards for me and my passenger on my 1800 and love them. My legs are too short for highway pegs so the boards give me room to move and adjust my feel and legs on long rides. My lady has the same option in the back.

Thanks for the input everyone!
I just ordered the Kuryakyn floorboards from Cruiser Customizing. They are about a hundred bucks cheaper than anything else I have found. I will also be getting The Princess some glass riding boots. Don't need a Princess with a broken ankle!
Thanks again!

I replaced my passenger pegs with Kury Swing-wing pegs. My girlfriend rides with me all the time and she loves them. It's like a floorboard when closed, extended highway peg when opened. Had them 3 months so far with no issues.

I must chime in here.

I bought my VTX primarly for two up riding.... or so, I thought.

It goes like this. I had a shadow for a while. It was a great 750cc bike. I could take it on the express way and enjoy it; I'd go to and from work (60 miles at the time). I'd go for random rides. But, I (we?) wanted to tour. We took it (two up) to galena IL which is (given the route we took) about a 3 or 4 hour ride. We had some comforet issues and :)() bathroom issues on the ride. We took back-roads because the 750cc bike barely had the power to get to a safe highway speed two up and even then it was taxed. Didn't have additional room on the throttle to speed up past 75 mph if need.

So, shortly after that I started looking at larger displacement bikes. My wife too, enrolled in a motorcycle certification course (she planned this as a surprise "gift" to me). She passed, I bought the VTX. I went on a few street rides with her on the shadow but she was never extremely comfortable driving the cycle her self. She decided against getting her lic. (because then we'd have to add her as a lic. driver on insurance and that'd raise costs). So, at that point I started making modifications to my VTX to accommodate a passenger with the intention of touring.

Fast forward two years and we've sold the Shadow this year. It hadn't been ridden except for me to ensure it kept running right or to move it. We've spent roughly $600 adding things like a sissy bar and floor boards to the VTX. More if you add her gear in (close to $1500-$2000 then). (I also spent money configuring the shadow for two up riding but lets set that aside as I chalk it up to my mistake -- should have gotten a bigger bike from the get-go).

Keep in mind, she was on board with all of this saying it was fun and she'd like to be able to ride with me. I've always discussed doing the IBA 1000 mile runs and going to the grand canyon from Chicago. She told me that it'd be great.

At this point in the year she's probably only done 25-30 combined miles with me whereas I've done close to 500 or 600 total. All of the money I've spent on modifications for my VTX thus far has been for passenger comforts; I've added nothing that I wanted like highway bars or fairing. She will now avoid riding at almost all cost citing it's not comfortable or that it's boring. I am also starting to hear about the money I spend (or want to) on it (and mind you, we have a healthy savings, two properties (one of which we rent [which is fall out from the economy]). We are in a better position then a lot of people.

So, ultimatly my point is -- are you sure she wants to ride or is she trying to please you? It might be important to consider this. Perhaps she is not getting the enjoyment from it you are and therefore she is citing issues to either avoid going or on the ride she is spending time thinking about it because she is board.

I don't mean to imply she "probably" is doing this or you face the same scenario I ran into. I just think it's important for you to consider and discuss with her before you invest heavily in adding things to the bike for two up riding when there might be things you'll get more use out of. Be neutral; make sure she knows it's ok if she doesn't want to do the longer trips you might be planning.... For shorter trip boots (for safety) and the pegs will be fine....

Glad you got the floorboards. now, protect her ankles with some boots, and let her pick them out. as far as you're concerned, even if she doesn't ride with you much, you've pleased her, listened to her concerns, kept peace, and you're now trying to keep her safe also. sounds like a winning combination to me. peace in the house.
i dont have to worry about that, but i noticed on here where all this big, tuff, bikers always say if mama is happy, they're happy. also, now she'll understand when you tell her about all these safety features that the bike needs and you must have, like fairing/batwing, highway bars, pegs, hard bags...etc. of course, i'm hoping you do have a helmet for her??? :choppersm

I'm a little late on this, but can a woman survive with only one pair of boots? :D

Bought floorboards for the VTX when she was a passenger and again when she became a rider, so it's a proven fact they need more than one pair of floorboards to make them happy. :D
