Hello and thank you all for all the information on this form. I’ve been reading different parts of this form for months and just became a member.

I have a 2007 VTX 1800. I recently started to hear a small pinging noise coming from what sounds like my Valves. Took the risk and drove it to the nearest Honda dealership and they listened to the sound and said it sounds like I need to have my front hydraulic valve replaced. As I talked with them more they said that maybe if I do an oil change that if might help the hydraulic value and might start working.

I’ve heard that the VTX 1800
Just has loss values and when you don’t hear them is when you’re in trouble
That is I change the oil and start using synthetic oil it will stop
I need to replace the Hydraulic Valve

My bike is still all stock and has about 10,000 miles on it.

Can I get some advice from you guys out that that actually know about this stuff?

Thanks for taking the time

The 1800 has solid 'lifters' (the rockers ride on the cam directly) not hydraulic ones like in my old car. Unless I am totally brain-dead this am the person you talked to has head in A$$ syndrome. I do not know what other hydraulic valve he could mean.

It was due for valve adjusting 2k miles ago. If not done I would change oil/filter (if due) and do the valve service. If due, I would do it oor have it done ASAP due to your noise.

I would NOT go to that dealer for service if they are claiming your VTX has hydraulic lifters.

Welcome from Tennessee and wishing you a wonderful day. :patriot: I can't speak about the 1800, but the 1300 valves do talk back to you just a little..a light ticking sound.

+1000000...First off, there's no "lifters" in a VTX engine...Overhead cam design, with the rocker arms riding on the cam lobes....Nothing "hydraulic" about it whatsoever...And that dealer indeed has "rectal-cranuim disorder"....Steer clear of that place in the future....They obviously don't know chit about a VTX...

Correctly adjusted, the valves in a VTX engine will make a light ticking sound...Kinda alarming at first, but eventually you get used to it...If it bugs you too much, find somebody with an old 1970's Harley Sportster and have them fire it up and run it a bit...You'll swear there's somebody inside that engine with a ball pean hammer trying to bust his way out...lol..:D

I just logged on the site to ask about the ticking sound of the valves and grabbed this thread. No need to post new thread, you guys answered my question.

My 1800 has always had a valve ticking sound for about the first 30 seconds or so after I stop. Normally it is not noticable when starting up cold. Last week I took her to the honda dealer, (a trusting bunch of guys I might add) and had the valves adjusted plus oil change with syn. Thought the ticking sound would go away but it did not. Now having read the replies here, mostly Bassdude's, I will worry no more.

Thanks a bunch.

Oh yea, welcome to the site coreyVTX1800!

Seems the valves are set a little tight at the factory and/or they wear during break in and get tight. After the first valve adjustment, they are noisy and people freak out, thinking they're too loose. As others have clearly stated, there aren't any lifters in these engines, especially hydraulic lifters.
