So this past weekend I sold my 1996 Honda Shadow VLX after deciding it was finally time to move up to something bigger and better for longer distances. I've been looking at the VTX 1300R's and I like what I see.

I was able to take one for a test ride, but that didn't go so well. The bike was constantly backfiring and died on me twice. You would think a dealership would know better than to send someone out on a test ride with a bike that's not running right.

Anyways, now I am looking at a 2008 VTX 1300R that has 1248 miles. Asking price is $6350 and I don't know if the seller is willing to deal at all or not. I know the price has recently come down.

I know that's less than book value, but besides that, is it a good price?

I am also thinking of getting a couple of things for it right away, but am kind of overwhelmed by choices and could use some help narrowing things down.

First, I want to get a set of hardbags for it. I'm thinking something that sort of matches the retro look of the R and that also matches the bike's proportions. As in, not too skinny or small. I am thinking that I am going to mount the turn signals into the bags, so if there are bags where that has already been done and still matches the bike, that might be good.

Also, will I need separate mounting hardware? If so, what would I be looking for? I would want the bags to be mounted pretty close in to the fender.

Second, I am thinking about the exhaust. I am really liking the look of the Roadhouse Dooley's. I've seen it mentioned that you need to add an extension to the kickstand of the bike. Is this possible without being able to weld? Or do I need to find someone who can weld, or does someone out there make a replacement kickstand that's already modified? Because I know very little about aftermarket exhausts and what's possible or not possible, this next question might be a dumb idea, but I would rather know beforehand. I know there are blacked out exhausts available and that may be the route I should actually take, but is there a treatment out there for a chrome exhaust to make it black and keep the shine?

Sorry if this is a bit long winded. I have a picture in my head of what I can possibly do to this bike if I get it, but I want to make sure that I am being realistic with what's possible first. Thanks in advance for any help and advice. :)

As far as the bike price goes in my opinion. That's a pretty good price. You may want to try to deal in a set of aftermarket exhaust or a warranty. I bought my 2006 in Febuary of this year, it had 4800 miles on it. I got for less than $5k, AND a 2 year Hondacare warranty. If they dont budge on the price, make them earn you business. If they want to sell a bike bad enough they will deal with you. BUT.... When you get it post a picture in here so we all can enjoy it with you. Good Luck

Dooley's are getting REALLY tough to find, due to Roadhouse closing up shop...Back in May we hosted a tech session here, and Cafe member Tomkat rode in from Arkansas and left his bike here to sit overbight Friday so the valves could be adjusted on Saturday...I pulled his bike into the garage when we were done for the evening friday, and the kickstand was a pain to get at (Roadhouse Dooley equipped)...

My Personal opinion is if your comfortable with the price then its a good price. At 1248 miles she isn't even broke in yet. I have found you can always find a better price after you buy something, if your comfortable then go for it. It is not an outrageous price by any means.

I am also thinking of getting a couple of things for it right away, but am kind of overwhelmed by choices and could use some help narrowing things down.

My advice is to get your bike and do quite a bit of research on HardBags. There are many many choices out there, different sizes shapes and level of quality. Mounting varies depending on which bags you end up with. None of the standard mounts that I am aware of offer a very tight to the fender fit. To get that you will most likely have to do some modifying. You don't want to rush into something as major as hardbags until you are sure. Look around here and on the web and at bike nights first.

Also, will I need separate mounting hardware? If so, what would I be looking for? I would want the bags to be mounted pretty close in to the fender. See above comments

First off, I believe Roadhouse is no longer making the Dooley's for the VTX which is a crying shame, because IMHO they are the best sounding and best looking exhause on the 1300 R/S/T models. My buddy has them on his S model and they are SaWeet!

As far as blacked out shiney. There are some aftermarket exhausts that come blacked out with a ceramic finish on them that is shiney. Many aftermarket exhaust the chrome is an outer shield. You could always send them to a chrome house that does "Black Chrome" If you have never seen it in person it is some cool looking stuff

If you follow this advice and get a new set of pipes with the deal, DO NOT let them rejet the carb!!...That's probably why the bike you rode was running so crappy...Idiot dealers insist on a jet kit with new pipes, and it's completely not needed with a water-cooled bike...

I just bought an "04" with 1500 miles for 6k, but it had ALL the extras and then some on it.(Boss bags,Vance&Hines pipes, crash bars w/foot pegs, floor boards, special grips, extra lights and light kit, etc) I LOVE it. Don't care if I paid too much, it's what I wanted. GO FOR IT and enjoy!!!!! OH BTW the wife likes it too - BONUS!!!!

That's a pretty good price but you might be able to get him to come down another 350. I got my 08 with 1500 miles for $5,500.00 but it did/does have a radiator problem that needed to be fixed. I would offer $6,000 and see what happens. He might just take it. Especially since he's brought the price down already. He may be motivated.

Shop around and then shop around some more. I just bought Nevinsids bike for 6 grand and it is completely loaded. Yes i got a helluva deal, but it just shows that they can be had. Good luck with your search and also keep in mind that deals are usually a little better in the off-season.

I thought the choke was supposed to go back in on it's own as the bike warms up. I could swear I read that somewhere. Not being smart here either. I don't even use the choke on mine so I truly don't know.
No it doesn't....Not even a real "choke" either..An enrichment circuit in the carb that just dumps extra fuel into the carb...Has to be manually pushed back in...Haven't used mine in over 3 years now myself...

The bike I test road had close to 50k miles on it and after it was warmed up, I had to pull the choke out just to keep it running while I was waiting at a light. I had no intentions of buying that bike, it was the only 1300 that dealer had and they offered to let me ride it and I agreed thinking it would give at least let me know if I like riding the 1300.

The place selling the one I am thinking about just sells used bikes as far as I can tell. Nothing new and no parts and no servicing.

lray5081, I was thinking of exactly that. Offer him $6000 and see what happens. With what everyone has said, the bike is priced pretty good.

hoss37, been looking. Not a whole lot available around here. I would wait for the off season, but I am already dying to get out and ride and it's only been like 3 days since I sold my bike. lol

That really sucks about the Dooley's. I've seen places that it looks like has them, but then not everyplace that shows as having an item actually has it. I'll have to dig into that more. If they are so rare, would it be sacrilegious for me to do some sort of coating over the chrome? :D

LazyDawg, I have heard of black chrome, but I have not actually seen it. That was actually one possibility I had thought of.

As far as the hardbags go, I've been looking, but like I said, it's a bit overwhelming. No bike nights that I know of around here to go and look at others' bikes. Been browsing this forum a bit and have seen some amazing bikes you folks have and again, just kind of leads to information overload. I need some ideas to focus my search a little better.

And don't worry, if I buy the bike, I will post a picture asap.

Endy:

Welcome to the Cafe... and you better just leave your wallet out... this fun is going to cost you... but then again it is fun... :D

Spoiler
I have no doubt that it will. But that's not all a bad thing. I never did much with my last bike and I had it for 13 years. This one will be different. :D

Thanks for the welcome. :)

Small update. I offered him $6000 for the bike and he said that it was already priced as low as he would go. I had a feeling that was gonna be the case. I might still buy it. Mulling it over, not that it's a bad price, but the fact that it's completely stock which means that anything extra I want I'm gonna have to pay for at some point. One of the things about buying used is that hopefully the previous owner already managed a few of the add ons. Not the case this time.

I'm also disappointed about Roadhouse being no more. Funny how that didn't show up in my initial searches about the Dooley exhaust. So now I am leery of the places that supposedly still have the exhaust. Not sure what I would want to do about the exhaust now because I don't think most of what I see out there matches the look I am going for.

As far as the hardbags go, I am leaning heavily towards the Tsukayu Strong Bags. Looked at the Jumbo Strong Bags and as much as I would like the carrying capacity, I am thinking they would be a little too big for the bike. Is there a place known for a good deal on them? Then I would just want to figure out some way of adding turn signals to them.

That one was not the bike for me apparently. Sold before I made up my mind. That's ok, though.

Now I am looking at another one that may be a heck of a deal because it's not running. I'm waiting on more details of that, but it sounds like it was just sitting for awhile and I have experience getting bikes going from that. :)
