Hi all,

A rant here about Progressive Insurance. I am in the over 50 crowd, and since i was 20, I used USAA (military officer's insurance). A company that noted "officers and gentlemen" are to behave honorably and until yesterday they held their half of the bargain in all my insurance needs.

They dont have bike insurance but they send you to Progressive. When I talked with progressive last year, i bought everything they offered, to include roadside insurance and trip insurance. The gal on the phone noted with those two I would have no worries about break downs etc, I'd be covered.

On yesterdays trip, the VTX wouldnt start. I called to find that roadside assistance would only cover 15 miles and not take me and the Mrs home. OK, Lets go w/ trip insurance... nope only applies if you are over 100 miles from home.

I was guilty of not riding in a 15 mile circle or not making 100 straight line miles out... the deadzone in the middle that is in the fine print. Bottom line, 7 hours later I had a friend pick us up, drove my own trailer back to the bike and recovered it 45 miles from home.

If you have progressive, dump em and get w/ someone w/ honor!:banghead:

I went with Geico over Progressive simply because of cost and the recommendation of friends.
I too was disappointed that USAA does not cover bikes and just dumps you off with Progressive.
I wonder how much each company could lower their rates if they did not have commercials on every 5 minutes on every channel?

I recently dropped USAA since they raised my rates for no reason. They stated it was due to an across the board rate hike in Georgia. Well, they actually did me a favor, found a much lower rate with a different auto insurance company. Also found another motorcycle insurance company with lower rates and better coverage on custom parts.

It always a good idea to always check around when your renewal comes up anyway to make sure you are getting the best rates.

In reference to roadside assistance, it is stated in most policies that you have to be a certain amount of miles from your residence for them to cover the tow bill. Most policies also state that they will only tow to the nearest repair facility from where you broke down. Also the trip interruption insurance also states in most policies that it only applies if you are 100 miles away.

That why it is important to always READ your policies when you receive them so you know what the coverages are and what are the stipulations.:patriot:

Sorry for your misfortune.I have Progressive, have it for years on my car, bikes, now when i got the roadside assistance i had two options 1st. will take bike like 50 miles,2nd. unlimited will take bike to nearest motorcycle dealership, pay a little more but well worth it.
This also includes $50.00 a day towards car rental if needed, plus $100.00 a day for hotel.
Not to be a wise ass but check your policy.15 miles like you stated would not get me out of my driveway.

Tell them you are somewhere else than where you really are, almost like you are lost then get the phone # of the towing company so that you can give 'detailed directions'. Insurance makes a call to dispatch a truck, you call and tell them the real deal then the towing company gets to write the 100mi and you get a ride home. You both win.

Screw them, get what you are paying for!

Geico first... clear two years riding, no claims, tickets, or accidents (Car or Bike) and they raised my rates rather signifigantly. I mean from $275 to $375.

I went with Progressive, and got the added perks, and it was better coverage for less money.

I do appreciate you're bringing this to my attention, I will have to check my policy specifically, And I understand the Rant.. but I'm not about to drop my insurance carrier on one bad experience.

My father (60+ y/o) SWEARS by Dairyland... check them out.

That's why I have separate cover for the bike. I use AAA (I know it's not offered in all states, however). I already had AAAPlus for the car, just upped the coverage to include the bike. The RV policies are the ones that cover bikes (PlusRV and PremierRV - main difference between them is Plus tows up to 100 miles and Premier tows up to 200 miles).

Was riding with someone who had to use AAA coverage once for their bike. Her clutch cable broke (and we couldn't get a make-it-home quick fix to work) while 60-70 miles from home. A flat bed was brought out and transported the bike to her destination of choice and then dropped her off at home, too! -

To me, that is worth the extra $40/yr I spent to upgrade my AAA coverage.

That's not only hilarious but smart thinking...

This is what I use as well... AAA covers me anywhere "but" also depending on your level it is only 15 miles then such and such $ after that.

That being said, I have USAA for a bunch of other services and I'll never consider them a bad company... Progressive, dunno, never had a problem but all insurance companies try screwing us, that's practically their job. Also in this case, yes USAA sent you to Progressive, but USAA didn't really do anything wrong.

I have USAA on vehicles and and use them for other things as well. ...and Bikeline/Markel American on the bikes. Just turned in a lil hail damage in the spring on couple vehicles. USAA paid off no problem and fast. Bikeline for me has the best bike rates and coverage of any company Ive ever used. http://markelinsuresfun.com/motorcycle-insurance

Never had a claim there though so I cant speak for that first hand as of yet. Couple friends use them and have had claims they said worked out no problem.

While I've never had USAA insurance, I have been a victim of them. Three years ago my hubby was hit by someone who had USAA, after three months, they still had not settled on the damage to the bike. It took a letter of complaint to the Insurance Commissioner to get them to resolve the claim.

(See Stump's post above) I use Markelinsuresfun.com also! Great rates/service!

I asked Allstate, (since that is who we have our cars insured with) and the girl I was talking to said "we don't do crotch rockets" :icon_chee. But quoted something like $500+ every 6 months! NO WAY!

That's not only illegal (and will get your insurance dropped when they find out) but part of why insurance rates keep rising. It WASN'T what you were paying for ........ just sayin' :nope:
I wouldn't go so far as calling it illegal, but might get you dropped from your policy.

This would only get you cancelled once the insurance company finds out and then you will be paying more for your premiums trying to get another insurance company to insure you; plus as stated by others, you submitted a false claim.

If you would have read your policy, you would have known the rules; don't like the rules, then find another insurance company or better yet as others have stated get AAA if they are available in your area.

No need to make a bad situation worst, especially when you are the one that will be worst off in the end.

What you are paying for is what is in your policy, READ IT! :patriot:

Did you read the coverage? I just added roadside with trip interruption and read the entire coverage before buying it. No towing coverage takes you home, it takes you with the bike. The coverage will only transport your vehicle to the nearest repair facility. If that is your house, so be it. Trip interruption is for just that, trips. It's not AAA.
