I just changed my rear end gear oil, and I want to make sure I did it right. The shop manual said to put it on the side stand on level ground, which I did. It just doesn't seem that when I re-filled it that it took much before it started leaking out the fill port (which indicates it is full.) I cracked the drain plug to make sure there was new oil in the gear area, and there was. Is there a possibility that it should be standing straight instead of leaning on the kickstand when you re-fill it? This would get a little more oil in the rear. The shop manual said to do it on the side stand, and I did. Just hope I did it right.

The shop manual also tells you how many ounces to put in...on the side of the Mobil one bottle there is a guage that you can use to measure how much your puttin in....without lookin at my manual I think its about 4 ounces...better chk that though

My manual makes it very clear that the bike must be straight up; not on the side stand. It probably makes little difference, though.

The first time I changed the oil was at 1,000 miles, and it looked like it needed it. I checked it again at 5,000 and it still looked new. (Mobil 1)

I change it every couple of years, now. It never looks as bad as it did on that first change.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the capacity of the rear, and it WAS 4.1 ounces. I guess it's fine; just didn't want to have to have the differential rebuilt 'cause it didn't have enough oil in it for thousands of miles!

Saw this same topic on another site (http:www.mdxiles.com), and one response was from an individual with alot of experince with Hondas, and said the initial gear oil used has special polymers for lubricating and settign the drive, and that the oil shouldn't be changed too early for that reason. I know that early synthetic oils were graphite based, and caused alot of confusion because they were black and looked dirty compared to the oil style petro oils.

Anyway, jess my 2 cents...
