Quick valve adjust question

Ok, got all the chrome off and ready (maybe.....

) to get started checking the valves. Quick question. I removed the timing cover and it didn't look anything like what I imagined...

I guess in my mind I expected the large timing bolt (if that's what it's called) to be dead center in the hole after I removed the cover... But it's sitting around nine o'clock at the rear (left if looking straight into the hole) of the hole... Is this right? ... Or were my expectations flawed...

Anyone? I can snap a picture if my explanation isn't making sense...

That's what I thought, too, charlie. But I wonder if it's a point of view thing. I took three photos. One from the rear looking forward, and two looking straight on. One close and one far.

You notice what I'm looking at? The bolt is actually to the left side of the opening... at least on my bike it is...

And by backwards I assume you mean counter-clockwise? Meaning ONLY turn clockwise, correct?
