Took the Motorcycle Safety Course last fall and got my "M" Driver's License.

Wife of 28 years died in March of this year after a 2.5 year illness (cancer).

Bought the (new) 2009 black 1300C a couple of weeks later, based largely on what I had read/seen on this forum and others. I have about 5,000 miles on it so far. Memphis shade, cobra engine guards & highway pegs. Honda sissy bar to hold a piece of luggage a buddy gave me when he upgraded from a Vstar to a Goldwing. I've ridden several hundred miles several weekends. I find riding to be tremendously relaxing

Next weekend, though, will be a new challenge, though I'm not interested in killing myself; if I get beat down, I'll lengthen the # of days...but here's the plan.

Leave Lincoln (Nebraska) about 5 a.m. Saturday. West on I80 to Laramie Wyoming. South on various state highways til you get in the Vail/Gypsum area, then East on I70. Highway 77 back to Lincoln. I think it is going to be about 1,300 miles or so. I plan on being home Sunday night.

I've been to Colorado bunches of times. It's a beautiful state, but I'm going out there to ride, not look at the mountains.

Other than the fact that some of you will tell me I should have bought a better seat, is this a ridiculous plan?

One thing about longer trips is to stay hydrated. For me I mounted a Camelbak fanny pack to my risers between the handle bar and windshield. It makes it real easy to stay hydrated without having to stop and a nice bonus is that it's thermal lined keeping the drink cold.

sorry for your loss........my advice....go as far as you are comfortable going......do not over do....if you get tired, pull over, hydrate, eat something, I usually bring a light snack like granola bars.......take a power nap.......let yourself stop somewhere if you get tired........better late than not at all!!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss. The open road is a great place but please keep you thoughts to the road. Drifting thoughts have caused many fatalities. I hope the trip is all you hope it will be for you. Ride safe and let us know how it went.

Should be no problem, but you will be tired at the end of the day. I just did a trip with several days over 500 miles and one over 600. As I am sure you have heard, you really need a new seat, ( my Mustang Touring seat is fantastic), AND a windshield and / or fairing is a must, IMHO. Have a great trip!

Sorry for your loss.

PLEASE follow the advice already offered here and take - it - easy. There need be NO RUSH for anything on this trip. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the ride. Wake up when you feel rested, ride until you want to stop, eat when you're hungry, hydrate constantly, stop and get a room well before dark and sleep. Repeat as necessary.

And know that your dear wife will be with you the entire way.

Ride safe.

Little change in plans - leaving Friday -> I 80 to Grand Island through the Sandhills (NW Nebraska), US20 into Wyoming, (don't have my atlas in front of me) west about 150 miles, south down the eastern side of the rockies, I70 into Kansas, US 77 up into Nebraska.

Somewhere along the line, call in sick on Monday, cuz they didn't give me the day off.

Golden Rule of motorcycle touring

Put all the stuff you plan to take in one pile,
Put all the money you plan to take in another pile.
Then cut the 1st pile in half and double the 2nd pile.

:D

Freeze bottled water at night for the next days ride.
Pack old socks and undies and just toss 'em. Wally World has convenient 3 packs.
