on many of the later model HDs before they went FI, it has the same carb as the kawi 1500/1600 classics (before they went FI)...both were CV40mm (kawi called there's CV"K"). the difference was 2 fold, it had a different manifold side and a different intake side, but the difference in those 2 were the HD carb bolted to the manifold side and the air intake bolted on the intake side (kawi used the slip into the rubber boot on both side held on by a clamp)....the 3rd differnece was you could actually buy the whole carb from HD for just under 300 bucks while kawi wanted almost 650 for thiers. buying the carb from HD and the manifold connector for another 100 (which still slid on to the manifold with rubber boots and a clamp, just had the bolt on in the middle) you still came out ahead of the game, even after adding the aftermarkt bolt up (on the intake side), you stil had less money (or equal amount) in a new system with a better air intake than the you could buy the who damn carb from kawi for...
sorry for the long post, but my point is yeah, i think you can and it wouldn't take that much innovation to do it (other than buying the manifold crossover with a bolt on flange to match the S&S carb...
