If your bike is new thats pretty normal. Also if you have a windshield and ride without a helment you hear a lot more. Most of this will go away after your initial service and about 1000 miles. At around 2500 miles you should change to synthetic oils and this will help also. At least that has been my experience on a 1300R.

I have just 800 miles on mine and the shifting is clunky-- so it seems to be the norm.

We'll change to synthetic at 2000 miles and see what happens.

I'm experiencing the same clunky shifting noise, especially from 3rd down to2nd and from1st up to second. 1800f(black angus) has 3300 miles on it.
Is this the norm then?
I didn't notice it as much at first, but you know how it is, the longer you own an X the more you love it, and the more you hear every sound it makes.

I like the noise....that way I know what gear I'm in.....it talks to me!!!:choppersm
I'm with you. Downshifting to a stop, absolutely know when I get to first. Get used to it. You can only make it softer, it won't go away. 8500 on mine, Mobil 1 MX4T, clunk still there...

I have been riding Hondas since 1969. When they started making the bigger bikes the shifting got noisier. My 1977 Goldwing was very clunky right up to when I sold it with 120,000 miles on it. I wouldn't worry too much.

Clunk!

34,000 and it still clunks between shifts. AND, the clunks have somewhat different tones depending on which gear your're shifting from. I can always tell when I'm in 1st by the clunk.
I gets worse the closer I get to the magical 4,000 - 8,000 - 12,000 - 16,000 ..... service. I would assume the oil is starting to break down and it causes the shift to be less smooth. Synthetic will help, but that's just the way thses bikes are. It is not hurting anything. There's nothing wrong.

The shifting noise is inherent in the VTX, especially when downshifting from second to first. Before I bought mine new in 04', I did some research on line ( I don't remember the site.) and the review I read mentioned this. Mine has about 9100 mi on it and it still makes the noise when I downshift. That's ok though. It won't hurt the bike and you know for sure when you are in first gear!

Honda uses straight cut gears and they are noisy, but practically bullet proof. Mine does the same thing. Seems if I wind it up to about 20 in first and shift it to second quick, it's less noisy. It does clunk going from second to first. There's a thuosand posts on the internet about it. As NC said above, just ignore it, theres nothing wrong.
