The warmer it gets the harder it is to get it into gear and then once i do it regularly slips down to 4th. any ideas?

Clean and lube the shifter pivot point, and shift it firmly into gear...

Mine does this in 3-4 the VTX is a great rugged bike, but its built like an AK47, Reliable, sloppy and not to any fine tolerances so there tends to be slop in the shifter, clutch, throttle response bla bla bla. you can start to make these better but you may also inadvertantly loose that reliability. so I have to agree with Bassdude try to lube and be deliberate in your shifts
