First step is to change back to the old plugs that you removed and see if the backfire goes away. If not, then figure out what got messed up when you made the plug change.

Ok thanks. It was running great till I installed the champion ra8 hc at .033. Was thinking the power commander was trying to compensate for the change. It runs ok but the popping noises makes me wonder. Are new plugs to be tightened beyond the 10 foot pounds to seat the new plugs?

09 VTX 1300 does not have a power commander, power commander is for fuel injected bikes like the 1800, the 1300 has a carburetor

Did you disconnect any of the vacuum lines when you were working in it? If so, did you double check them?

I just had this happen on my VTX1300C. Have 06 with Vance Hines pipies and hypercharge. There was a hole in the gasket where the hypercharge connects to the carb.

A while back it back fired without changing anything. I had a loose nut where the exhaust pipes connect to the engine. After tightening back fire went away.

I will check the vacuum lines today. When I drove it last it felt as it has a vibration when I opened the throttle like it was off sync. Can a bad plug wire make it after fire. I'm also planning on testing the coil and wires to be sure they are up to par. Also double check exhaust bolts. This is driving me nuts. I only changed the plugs out and I've done that before with no issues. Thanks

Problem solved.. I bought a spark plug tester and the front right plug had very weak spark so I removed the coil and tested it and it was good but one of the wires had pulled out of the coil far enough to misfire. Also grounds were rusty. Cleaned them up and no more after fire or popping. Sounds better too. Thanks for your patience. I'm learning more everyday. This website helped me enormously. Thanks a billion till next time. Adios
