Hi to all. I'm not sure how many folks are aware, or even care for that matter lol, that Honda seems to have a problem with posting the correct speed on the speedos of their bikes. I fist noted it with my '04 Wing and now on my bride's 1300 VTX as well. I've included the site for a great piece that fixes the problem. Not to worry, if you run your speeds you see on the speedo, you will usually indicate a faster speed than you're acutally traveling. I cut the wires to the speedo in the tank area and ran the harness to the battery box area, and set the lil unit behind the right side cover. Her bike had a 3.75% error in it. Though that sounds small, it puts on extra miles in a hurry.

I noticed that today on my first long ride. Using GPS for speed and distance to check my speedo I found that 70MPH is actually 63mph and 80 was 72.5mph and 90 was 81.2 mph. With this much error it will not give you a true reading on MPG either. With the GPS my MPG is about 45. That is a HUGE percentage to be off on the speedo. I had this problem on my wifes 2001 Honda Accord EX and it was off about the same as my VTX. After having it checked at a speedo shop for verification I went to Honda and they told me that less then 10% was acceptable. It was not for me so I called Honda of America and was told the same thing. Sounds like a class action suit if you ask me. Just think, if you lease a car and have to pay for over mileage this 10% could cost you some money or lower resale value do to mileage. YOu think Honda would take 10% less for one of their car or bikes? Bet not.

The folks selling the unit recommend using highway mile markers to determine your speedometer error. I don't know about other states, but I'm not so sure the mile markers on Texas highways are all that accurate for distance.

Using GPS to determine speedo error also has built-in errors since GPS units (at best) are only accurate to within 3-10 meters. Over a distance, this can also add up.

The only way I can figure to accurately determine the speedometer error is timing over an accurately measured distance at a steady speed. Even then, your speedometer face on analog units can have errors depending on the scale markings and viewing angle, as well as on digital units which are constantly rounding to a whole number on the display.

Has anyone has found a "best" way to determine speedo accuracy that is easily accessible to most everyone without costing a fortune (such as using a dyno)?

All this speedo talk seems to be pointing towards the 1300. Does the 1800 have the same speedo issues?
