I am having a starting problem with my 1800. Basically when I push the starter button the starter will begin to turn and then nothing. Sounds like a weak battery but I checked it and it load tests fine. Battery has a good 13.2 volts on it and was fully charged. Ground is good (cleaned and tightened everything). The fuel pump is charging fine. If I had to guess I would say I need to clean the starter switch, but I have not experienced this type of switch failure before. Anything else I should check?

That starter switch carries very little current to the relay when energized.. if it can energize the relay then there is nothing wrong with the switch.. the relay does all the heavy lifting.. not the switch.
Just because the battery says it has 13+ volts doesn't mean that is what is getting to the starter. Make sure the battery connections are CLEAN and wrench tight. That solves a multitude of problems right there.
Still won't start? ... get the battery properly load tested.. they can look good enough with a voltmeter and still fail miserably when put under a load.

A badly sulfated battery can show the proper voltage, but not give sufficient amperage to start the machine. What brand and age is your current battery.
Im guessing bad battery from your description.

A load test of the battery will indicate the condition of the battery. You can have the proper voltage, but not enough battery capacity to light a tail light. I thinking the same as "tnvnl", sulphated battery....might even try tighting battery terminals. Good battery...switch needs cleaning. Keep us posted on what you find.

Thanks to all for the replies! As indicated in original post the battery load tested fine. All terminals were clean and tight. Disassembled the switch and believe I found the problem. When depressed the contacts were traveling over and PAST the start contacts. After cleaning the switch and adjusting the springs the switch works fine now. I must press too hard when starting. Since rebuilding the switch I am using a lighter touch when depressing the starter button.

Again, thanks to all for the help.

I cleaned mine last weekend.
I noticed mine was getting bad and then the headlight
wouldn't come back on when it started. Switch isn't hard just has the pain in......

Most folks press the switch much harder than required, the contacts on the switch are the stop limters it appears. Wishing all well.
