ive got a question, hopefully a simple one. My mechanically challenged brother asked me what might make his shift lever not return after he shifts..I told him it's probably dirty and bound up a bit and that i would clean it up for him and lube it with some white grease. Am i on the right track? His bike is an 1800 S model with the stock heel and toe shifter. any help appreciated. thanks, Bry

Not hard at all. Took me about 45 minutes total. And I took my time doing it. Some may take more time others may take less it all comes down to being comfortable with the work you are doing.

I don't even take mine apart. I just give it all a good squirting with brake cleaner, and let it dry then spray it good with white lithium grease.

Consider this: the shifter has to be cleaned and relubed periodically because the grease dries out and it attracts dirt. I started using silicone spray on it. Doesn't dry out or attract dirt and an occasional shot keeps it working without taking it apart. Installing the grease zerk is another option.

Take it apart and clean and relube it. I had to replace the entire plate the shifter attaches to because the weld broke from being too dry. I loosen the bolts on the bottom then take the pivot bolt out and clean it and the hole it slides through then use moly paste. It takes about twenty minutes and it worth it knowing it will last. That plate was about sixty bucks or so and I could not ride the bike without it. "I" would prefer having the knowledge that it is in good repair by taking it apart atleast THAT much.
