Had a hit on my trike. A potential buyer lives in NY, I live in Fla. If this works, he'll fly down and ride home. Does anyone know how/if/cost of him getting some kind of tag here, good to drive home with?

Won't be able to call DMV tomorrow, and can't find the info on the Fl DMV page. Any info is appreciated!

Not sure about getting a tag for it....As long as you write him up a bill of sale he will be fine...
No, he can't have my tag, and a bill of sale is not legal for transport without a tag in Fl, and who knows how many states up the eastern seaboard. He's nervous about it and asked me to check.......

I've read a lot of threads where people are very nervous about their license plates. I must be missing something because I don't see the big deal about leaving the old license plate on the bike for the buyer to use for a while. Just charge them the cost of a new plate (~$10) and let them have it is my thinking. What am I missing? Insurance is not the issue since that is vehicle specific not tied to the plate. If you sell the vehicle, you have to cancel the insurance regardless of what you do with the license plates. There are enough people worked up about giving/selling their plate that I must be missing something. Of course, this would only be the eleventy third thing I've missed today.

Pretty sure folks want to keep their tag so they can go get a new one without paying more, or they want to keep the number on it or whatever. Again if the guy is willing to give you money to compensate getting a whole new tag for you, then him having to pay state tax to bring it into New York and get a whole new tag and throw yours away... it's an option.

How soon is he flying in? Is it possible for him to overnight the money to you....you sign the title....get it back to him with a bill of sale and then he can go get his new tags at NY DMV before he flies out??? That way he comes home on his own tags...

I can't speak for any other state but I do happen to have a little info about NY. It's illegal to drive any vehicle unregistered thru this state. You can have the insurance, bill of sale and a wonderful smile to boot. If it's not registered it's not going to help. Additionally in NY they have the right to impound said vehicle if they get caught. He has a few options

1. He gets his own insurance and you keep it registered until he gets it home. Of course if he hits and kills someone you can be sued because your still the registrant. Far fetched but possible.

2. He applies For a temp NY State tag

3. He trailers it home

4. You guys do the sale and forms exchange prior to him coming down via money transfer and FedEx and he can come with HIS plates and insurance like mentioned above

Anything else is a gamble in my book. It's not like this guy is taking the bike a few miles down the road. I personally would trailer or pay a shipping company. I wouldn't want to drive anything I just bought used that far but that's just me

If I let him take my tag, and he never registers the bike, I'm going to have my hands full of legal issues if something ever happens. (That as per Florida DMV a few years ago.) And it's illegal for him to drive it through Florida to get home without his own plate. Regardless of the bill of sale and signed over title.

And a new tag costs a poop-bucket more then 10 bucks in Florida.

Sounds interesting. We're not at that point yet. And I'll suggest it. But for now he's lining up his ducks in case we cut a deal. We're 1500 miles apart and he hasn't actually seen the bike yet. I assume he wants to fly in and look before he gives me money. Unless he's an imbecile.......

Can I?

Buy a temporary tag to take my vehicle back to my home state

Yes, if the vehicle was purchased in Florida with a Florida title. You must provide proof of current insurance, the title and approved picture identification. The temporary tag is $7.50 and you will be assessed sales tax according to your state of residence.

Thanks. Couldn't find anything like that searching the State gov. Never thought to search counties.

I didn't even do that. I googled something like "can I get a temporary tag in Florida". Then I sifted through the result.

Many states offer a transport pass. It's usually a piece of paper that has come from the state u r leaving from.....you pay a small fee to register, usually gets posted in the rear glass, drivers side for transport.....probably tell you to keep it in your wallet for a bike. It's a one-way pass for situations such as this.
This is what you see posted in the glass of the vehicles headed South of the border on the interstate. Usually good for 7-10 days. They'll want to know the starting city-state,,,ending city-state.

Well, AFAIK, not many states will allow a non-registered vehicle on the road. OTOH, I've heard a number of stories where a new owner had a signed title and signed bill of sale, and the LEO let him go on. But that's the luck of the draw.

And yes, Florida really stings you on fees. We bought a car in California to make the move to Florida. When I go there, FLORIDA wanted to collect the sales tax! I showed them the invoice from California showing I paid sales tax there. They said okay, and just stung me for less sales tax. I know, if you buy privatly and drive home you could avoid sales tax. But I never understood what right Florida had to collect it if belonged to California. And then how on Earth could they justify charging me some tax when I proved I paid it to California. They showed me it in black and white. It wasn't a clerk making a mistake.

The vehicle IS registered to the original owner and his tags make it a viable vehicle. But thats up here.
