I know there was some discussion last fall about tire pressure vs. mpg. On my 1800, with max. load, the suggested tire pressure is Front-33, Rear-36. I have heard numbers in the 40/40 range. What pressures do you guys ride at and how does it effect your mpg and ride versus mfg suggested?

The difference does little for ride. Handling is a little better with the higher pressure. The real benefit is tire wear. The tires (especially the front) will give you more mileage.

My dealer advised me to run the max 42 lb on the stock Dunlaps. Anyone have suggestions on replacements for the Dunlaps.

One of the things I encounter a lot in Phoenix area is channeling cut into some of the road surfaces. This has the affect of making my bike slither somewhat.

I was wondering if a radial would be better vs bias ply.

:coffee: I like the dunnies. I use white walls and am a little Pxssed about the strike scewing up supply. When I put my bike away last fall the rear tire was see through. Unfortunitly Dunlop tire (whitewalls) are still on back order. So I went to the Maxxis Classic. So far I like the ride. I don't like the look of their whitewall. In stead of a smooth sidewall, the Maxxis has raised lettering in the whitewall and it looks a bit cheesy. But I will run this tire till it wears out and then make up my mind.

Hello,

Would like to ask another question regarding tire pressure.

When it's mentioned about running the tire pressure at max is that checked from a cold setting or hot after being ridden for an hour or so?

I also need help with my rear tire. The standard guages at filling stations are very difficult if not impossible to use because of the limited space. Anyone know of a good adapter for such purposes. Any advice filling the tires with air would be greatly appreciated from the season riders here.

Thanks in Advance,

Eric

Pressure is always taken when the tires are cold.

As for the adapter, I hear there is something you can screw onto the valve that has a 90 degree bend in it.....but I can't find it anywhere. Hopefully someone can help us both out here.

My rear tire came with a 90 degree valve stem from the dealer.

If worse comes to worse I suppose I could take my bike back to the dealer and have him install a 90 degree valve stem as well.

Seems like someone would sell an 90 degree adapter but still haven't been able to find one.

My understanding is that those stems are for a Goldwing. I agree, there has to be some sort of adapter out there. All I know is that whenever I have to change tires, I'm having the valves replaced with those.

Just ordered mine today, :)

90 degree valve stem adapter.

Good Luck
That's exactly what we ALL need. Thanks much!!!

Interesting little caveat they put in there..."This part is only to be used when airing the tires. Never ride with the adapter installed or the valve stem could become damaged, resulting in rapid air loss"...better read the fine print.

If they are for the Goldwings then how the heck did they end up on my VTX. Bought it new from the dealer and the back tire has a 90 degree valve stem on it! The attatched picture isn't he best but you can make it out. (Guess I just got lucky)

I also have one of those on my rear tire.

Is there anyone running radial tires on their 1300? The manual sez to run bias ply tires on the 1300's. I wonder why that is?

New Tires

I really like the Dunlop Elite 3's. I got the radials for my 1800 and the make bias ply for the 1300's. They are suppose to carry 20% more weight and handling is great. They are pretty reasonable price wise, too. I run 38 front and 40 in the rear. On the 1800 with the wife I run 40/40.
Good Luck.

Switch to Metzeler ME880 to stop the tires from tracking in rain grooves.
