Burned my arm slightly on mine the other day when I bent down to look at the fuel petcock to determine which position was off and which reserve. So it does seem to get pretty hot.
That was the first time I noticed it and I was surprised how hot it got myself.

 

I am going to guess then that this is a norm for this bike to radiate this kind of heat.

That left side cover has a 3 phase generator and probably a shunting rectifer/regular. Engine oil is also in and around the stator and flywheel. I never checked the temperature. I did replace two stator and R/R..

 

Since it is a project bike that needs TLC but runs, should I pull the cover and check the mounting bolts and such inside. Reason is I notice a whirling sound that's on the downside or following of RPM after I rev the engine. The whirling sound is a bit tricky to find but seems like around the stator area.
