Can anyone tell me what the average pulling weight is for the 1300 and the 1800. I'm considering a couple of options at this time so any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if I want a storage trailer, a camper, or a boat, or jetski, a sidecar, ect......no rush on the answers as I'm still in the thought process. lol.

I never try to pull anything that weighs more than half the motorcycles weight. I also try to keep the hitch weight to ~10-15% od trailer weight, and not exceed 25-30#. My trailer weighs 140# and I am redoing it to lose some weight and narrowing it a bit. My trailer is home made HF/Sears carrier). Hope this helps.

Don't envy me, It took me 30+ yrs to get there. Most of my earlier trips were just one week. Ther were three of us that every year picked a route. We called it the magical mystery tour. One person would pick the route and told the rest what kind of clothes to take. Camped out every night. except one nite when it was sleeting snowing on us in South Dakota. Called hoem and told DW's where we were now. THOSE were trips to remember. We would do between 1500 to 3000 miles in that week.
For all of you, just get out for a weekend to someplace you haven't been. meet new people. Just have fun. This is a BIG Beautiful country. Just explore.
By camping you meet more people from all walks of life.
Just remember if you sit home drinkin , ya ain't ridin. you could load up on thurs. nite and Friday after work take off and by 10:00pm you could be 500 miles from home. camping in a new place. I do woodworking in the winter and road riding/exploring in the better months.

Most of all HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!

Questions for Maxb

Your pictures of the trip are great, it must have been some experience for you. My wife and I have plans for the same type of cross-country trip to see the northwest.

I would be interested to know what trailer did you buy? Is it a motorcycle trailer or was it intended for a car? Who's seat were you sitting for the trip, and how did it work for you? Also, the Desert Dawg Chaps, did you find them heplful in keeping you dry an wet pavement, and block the wing out?

Thanks for your post, it was very informative.

I did this trip on a honda vt1100 sabre. I now have a vtx1300. My trailer was homemade. harborfrieight/sears cargo carrier. You can spend a little or a lot for a trailer. to me it's utility not looks. if I had not built my own I would have gotten a piggy back trailer. You can get a lot of helpful Info on trailers at
http://forums.delphiforums.com/MCTrailertowing/start

I had a corbin dual tour seat on the sabre. it was a little hard but felt better than stock. I have an ultimate seat on the VTX. It is a very plush seat. I put 2600 miles in 3 1/2 days to get to SF from IN. After that I just did what I felt like. Go at your own pace. I camped all but one nite (late rain lightning).

I don't wear chaps but I made some motor guard chaps and they really helped in wet and wind. Not pretty but what can you expect for $5. as far as chaps make sure they are easy to put on and off. When it's really hot you don't want them. They did come in handy when it hailed and rained in the mountains of Wyoming.

If you are going two up i would suggest progressive shocks and fork springs first. you won't won't be sorry.
Don't forget ear plugs and water. Wind noise can wear you out on long trips.
Clothing pack hot and cold. The temp doesn't matter but when it changes 50 degrees high and low you need cold gear.
Buy the best rain suit you can ... Makes all the difference. I spent $100 for a nelson riggs ater years of cheapy ones. I can not tell you the difference it makes. After all day rain the only thing wet were my feet and my chin.

hope this helps.

Back to the subject...please forgive us Fondo...we do get carried away sometimes....Good advice on trailor weight...no boat though...If you are going to pull a trailor then read up on it. Most hitches are rated for 45-50 pounds toung weight...do not exceed it! The pulling weight is not to be greater than 1/3 to 1/2 of the bike weight. You have to be able to stop! Here is a neat little write up on someone who has been there....http://www.gadgetjq.com/trailer.htm...
