Hey, y'all. I'm a new VTX owner, long time honda rider. I wanna say first off, I am pretty ignorant when it comes to engines. I've had my 1300s (w/kuryakyn hypercharger and bubs pipes) for about three days now, and I've noticed when I am highway riding my VTX makes a pretty dang loud rattling sound, especially when I am between 70 and 80mph. I was wondering if this was something I should be particularly worried about! My last bike was a 750 shadow, never had such an issue in my 4 years of ownership - hence the basis of my concern.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have the same problem and to me it sounds as if the rattle is coming from the middle of the bike below the passenger seat, somewhere near the storage (glove box) Im stumped! Only rattles occasionally ?????

The rattle seems to come from beneath the gas tank.

The funny part is the rattling sounds can make you chase you're tail a little bit. Because of the wind playing a part in it a headlight rattle can sound like it's coming from the back wheel area, a rattle in the speedo can sound like it's coming from under the bike etc, etc.

You'll more or less just have to ride down the road and (safely) touch different parts until you find the culprit.

The sound definitely seems to be coming from beneath the gas tank, it is getting louder, unfortunately. I held down the speedo, and it's not coming from there. It was suggested I removed the tank, but what am I looking for? I don't know anything about motorcycle engines. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the issue? Again, it sounds like a heavy metallic rattle, almost like machinery rattling. It starts to get quite loud when I am revving up the engine and when I am riding between 70 and 80mph. I just purchased this bike, so I'm a bit distressed about this issue and want to try to get it resolved with the very limited funds and knowledge that I have.

Now that discription sounds like you are just hearing the valves, if that's the case you can relax because they are suppose to make noise. It's when they go quite you should worry because then they are to tight. The best way to describe it is they will sound like a sewing machine at full speed while in the higher rpm's, now if they are clanging pretty loud like a monkey with a hammer on a frying pan they would be to loose but it's always better to have them to loose vs to tight.

Do you have a windshield on the bike? If so that will make the sound echo some and it'll sound louder than it really is while going down the road.

P.S. I just noticed where you live, I grew up in S Fla and spent 15 years in Lake Worth... (@ Lake Worth Rd & 57th Ave)

I do have a windshield. Thanks for the peace of mind regarding the sounds, I've never owned a vtx before, I've heard they were loud but folks weren't kidding.

As for Lake Worth, I'm a block off lake worth road, nearer towards the beach. Great little town!
