I've decided I now want to add a 30 amp relay between the battery and my existing "jconrad" power distribution block mod using a trigger from the blue/white stripe wire inside the headlight bucket. I found a blue/white stripe wire that is connected on both sides of the red connector, (see attached photo). Does it matter which side of the red connector I splice my tigger wire to?

Also, exactly what is the best way to splice into this blue/white stripe wire? Is it ok to use one of those 3M Quick Connect (snap on) splicers? Or, is it better to simply cut the blue/white strip wire, strip the ends, and then solder or wire nut my trigger wire to those ends?

Also, is it ok to use an 18 GA trigger wire from the blue/white stripe wire to the 30 amp relay?

I've searched the power distribution block mod threads and could not find exactly where and how others have tapped into this blue/white stripe wire. Any advice from those that are experienced with this mod would be appreciated!

if you are wire the relay on the frame side of the harness you want to keep your splice on that side of the connector. that way when you disconnect the wire to remove the bar harness you dont have to cut your wire.

i hate those doamn splice connectors so i would say no for that. i also dont like wire nuts on non solid wires. plus being a vehicle connectors con be in the elements and corrode faster than being indoors.

the way i splice wires together is, i take wire strippers and cut the insulation. dont strip it just cut. move down the wire about a 1/4" and make another cut. remove the insulation between the 2 cuts. tin the wires then solder them together.tape or i prefer heat shrink tubing.


relays dont require much amperage so you can use an 18 awg wire to trigger it

like greg said....would connect to the wire on the frame side of the red connector for future take apart

i would and have used the 3m quick snap...its been 3yrs and i have not had an issue

18 guage is fine.

hopefully you are going to install the relay close to the battery so its easy to service down the road.

Now that you say it, it is obvious (Duh!) :banghead: that I should connect the trigger wire to the frame side of the harness. In fact, my question seems stupid now, but then again NO question is a stupid question if you are not 100% sure right?

Thanks also for your comments on the ways to splice the wire and yes, I'll be putting the 30 amp relay right next to battery for easy servicing.

you can make a male plug for the plug in the light housing, I modified a prong wire plug and then used electric tape to secure it. That way I can unplug as necessary.
