I'm buying an 06 1300r from a friend. It has a lot of miles but not many city miles. My buddy added larger exhaust pipes then found he needed bigger carb jets to keep the bike from being cold natured. I've noticed harder shifting from first to second, (what seems) excessive heat from the exhaust and a low oil indication after a 40 mile ride. I'm considering going to a heavier oil but would appreciate your learned opinions.

Thanks. Jay C. Brown

1) You should never get a low oil indication...and may be indicative of other problems...namely running a motor and clutch on little oil.

2) VTX's always seem to feel to shift harder from first to second...little oil can also make this feel even harder.

3) 10w-40 is all that is needed in a water cooled motor. Would not go lower because of the energy conservative harm to the clutch and not higher because of the hurt on gas mileage and potentially clogging those small openings (one of the reasons why not to use oil additives).

I should have said 40 weight oil...

Well, part of your problem could be the jets he put in. If it is not a factory pro kit, it is possible junk, but others more knowledgeable will chime in soon for that.

Not sure why he thought just the pipes would require it to be jetted, also others will chime in soon.

Have you checked the oil level? You need to ask him what oil he used, whether it was dino or synthetic, and what grade. If he at any time used energy conserving oil, don't buy the bike. It ruins our wet clutches.

I use Rotella 5W40 Rotella synthetic and it should be fine. Going to a heavier oil is NOT the answer. If you have a low oil pressure light, there is a problem somewhere.

first off, the light could indicate something else...the sensor could be bad, etc...

as for oil, opinions are like well you know what they are like :)
here's the best advice i can give you for oil.....
use anything that's not energy conserving....use synthetic if you wish, use motorcycle specific oil if you wish, use what you think is right for you as long as it's not energy conserving :)

Thanks for your time and help. I'm sure the previous owner used 10W-40 though I don't know which kind. I'm a believer in synthetic and will probably service it with that. The service manual hinted at phantom blips of the oil light and there is no evidence of leaks or oil loss. I love the bike and for the money I can't lose. Thanks again.

First off your buddy didn't need to rejet with the new pipes...My guess is an idiot dealer told him he needed to and sold him the P.O.S. Dynojet kit...

Second a low oil indicator after only a 40 mile ride is not good...:nope:

Personally I would shop around for another bike...
