I have black smoke coming from my mufflers,I have cobra speedster longs, and a dyna-jet kit,but I don't no the size,I think the idle jet is a 55.Lot of gas smell, runs decent but I think it could be better(only owned this bike 8 mo's)I've been reading some posts,it's been a( great help)I did the pair valve removal,I had popping really bad,I was thinking about selling the bike after I payed the dealer to fix it and it stopped for about 5 miles and then was back.I happened upon vtx cafe and got some great advise here so I thought I'd throw out a thread and see what I got back.I know I have a gas issue because my plugs are really black and the ends of my mufflers.Anyway this is my question,do you think I should try to go up one notch on my needle or turn my A/F screw in.Also I was thinking about going with a better flowing air filter, should I wait til I try that first.

I thought about going back to the stock jets,as a lot of the posts I read said I did'nt need a jet kit,and also read about scar mod, which was something I could do without adding larger jets, also work turning down my A/F a little. But I was thinking about adding a better flowing air filter,so I was'nt sure if I'd hold off on the adjustments, because I'm reading I might need more gas after air cleaner change.

Well when does it put out the black smoke? If it does it at idle, then you do need to turn in the a/f screw. Do you know how many turns out it is? Also, I just added a more free flowing airfilter to my bike and am rejetting. It really all depends on the air filter you go with. Charlie D has posted some awesome info on carbs and carb tuning.
Here is a link to a thread by Charlie D about carbs. NOTE: The size jets he is refering to are the jets from the Factory Pro Stage 3 jet kit. DJ and Cobra have different standards for sizing. Here's the thread: http://www.vtxcafe.com/showthread.php?t=45937

Sounds like another DJ Kit gone horribly wrong and someone cranked up the Richness to compensate for their inability to get it tuned right.

You can go back to stock. Mechanics should, but rarely do, give you back your stock parts. If its possible, request YOUR stock parts back, and yes, you can revert it back to stock with a 1-Shim SCAR Mod and the bike will run just fine. IF you keep the air box stock or close to it.

If you plan on adding an aftermarket Air Intake, then you will probably be looking at re-jetting. At that point, you would get the air intake and a Factory Pro Stage 3 Jet Kit, and a Stock Spring. Which intake you get determines the starting point for re-jetting and fine-tuning. I would also recommend Glen's Permanent A/F Tool.

Jet Kit is around $60
Glen's Permanent A/F Tool is $40

So, basically, add $100 to any air intake system you're looking at.

As of right now, you're incredibly Rich. You can turn IN (clockwise) the A/F Screw to help it clear up.

Plugs have to be fouled by now.

D-J - junk
Factory Pro stage 3.
Once you try to adj the A/F you will see why we say to add Glen's Permanent A/F and you wont need the choke.

Hay gonzo - who has the FP3 for $60.

I got mine a month ago from Amazon.com and it was $64 shipped to my house. Just do a search on "Factory Pro Stage 3 vtx" on amazon and it will pull it right up.

Neither one will be any different performace-wise, regardless of what people tell you.

Just get what you think looks the best. But, Hyper's do stick out quite a bit, and can/do get annoying to some people because either their knee is constantly in contact with it or it makes the rear brake pedal harder to reach.

So, just be aware how far things stick out, pick something you think looks cool, and we will deal with it.

Personally, I really like Doug's stuff. Hes a guy here that makes them in his garage when he has time. Reasonable in price, and look great. The Velociraptor thing looks kinda neat too. I dig my edelbrock :)

But its all up to you, not us... your bike, you pick, then we advise :)

Yep... Amazon.com is the best place Ive found. Price has fluxuated up and down. In the fall they were down to $53 shipped.. since its spring, I guess they're adding another $10 to make a few extra bucks.

I just say $60 for a ballpark thing, its always changing.

I had this EXACT problem when I bought my bike! It also had the dynojet kit installed and I could never get it tuned correctly. I bought the stock parts for I think it was about $30 (stock main jet 195, needle, and spring) and added 1 shim to the needle and it runs great now. If i would have known I would probably have just ordered the factory pro kit instread. I think you would be fine either way but if your bike is like mine you will NEVER get the Dynojet kit tuned correctly in the bottom end so you will need to do one or the other to solve it.
