Transmission sticks in second

Last week we had our 2007 1300S in Colorado. For some reason the bike didn't want to down shift from second to first, only when I pulled over after pulling up mountain passed. We were riding two up. It would shift into first if I tried hard enough, but pretty often I'd start in second on unpaved overlook accesses. Everything would be normal once we got back to town. I checked the oil (it was full), so I tried to adjust the clutch for less freeplay - result no change. I'm running 1/2 synthetic shell rotella 10-30. I'm wondering if I should go full synthetic or try a different oil. Has anyone seen this issue? or have any suggestions? I'm also thinking about buying a gear counter. All in all the bike was great, I just hate starting out in second if the pull off is nasty.

It is not your oil. Something is amiss in the clutch, the clutch adjustment, the shift lever, the shift lever linkage, or in the transmission. All of the first four are easily tested, fixed, etc. Hopefully your problem will be there and not in the transmission.

Clean and lube your shifter linkage. There have been multiple stories just like yours, this cured most of them.

Thanks. I should have time to go through the linkage this week. Unfortunately I won't know if I did any good until I go back on another trip, although if it is something else, I assume it will continue to get worse.
