Okay.... obvious question... Why do you want a crate for your VTX?

Check you local MC dealer. I'll bet you could pick one up for next to nothing or at least get an ideal of how to build one.

Bikes are shipped from manufacturers partly disassembled in some sort of crates. I wonder if these crates are disposable in which case you could probably buy one cheap or if they are reusable in which case, you probably won't be able to buy one because they belong to the manufacturer not the dealer. In either case, with these crates you would have to partly disassemble the bike to make it fit.

If this is for a long stay in Italy, would you be better off buying a bike there and selling it when you leave? Can you import a bike from your home country to Italy? I would imagine there would be safety, emissions, and other issues to deal with where the rules in Italy differ from those of Romania.

I bought my wife a little CBR 250 a couple of years ago and watched the dealership take it out of the crate. I asked if I could have the crate and they let me pick up the parts of it. My plan was to be able to put the bike back in the crate if it was going to sit for very long but there would have been a lot of disassembly required of the bike and I decided not to mess with it.

 

Don't know what things are like over there, but if I was crating a bike, I would start with two standard shipping pallets, 40"x48". Line them up lengthwise and connect with a couple of 2x4x96" stringers. Throw a 1/2" sheet of 4x8 plywood on it and go from there. You could use 1x4s and 3/8" plywwod for the sides and top.

You want open space under the crate so the shippers can get a forklift under there.

Of course, this was all in SAE, and you're metric, so probably didn't help at all.

 

Thank you Frostbite, this is a very good ideea, I think I will build only the base plate from 2 pallets, without the rest.

To Vinish - I plan to stay 2 weeks in Italy and to visit also Malta and Tunisia, I would have went there on my bike but in March the weather here is still cold, in Italy is ok. Both Romania and Italy are in the EU so there are no differences regarding the emissions, they are more strict with the cars.
