Hey,

Just bought my VTX 1300c. I am getting it updated with new spark plugs, fluids, etc.

I cant find the manual and was curios where I can find the spark plug. New to riding.

Thanks in advance!

James, if you haven't looked, you might check on the left hand side behind the side cover where your tool pouch is ... my owner manual was slid into a front slot in a zip lock bag

Well I hardly know anything about mechanics but I am trying to teach myself.

Anyhow I came here to verify the process for the switching of spark plugs. Want to make sure I have it down right before I go touching anything. Dont want to strip something. I found the manual and just wanted to overview it.

Basically I take off the covers around the cylinders and located the spark plugs. After finding spark plugs I blow the area around the plug and make sure there is no debris.

Once I loosen that hose the spark plug is located on the inside correct?

After I find the spark plug I carefully extract the plug from the hose and prepare to place new plug.

I saw online a guy recommended that to thread on a spark plug you, hold the hold the hose above the threads and start off by threading the hose around the plug rather then doing the plug into the hose. He said it prevents from cross threading the plug.

Last but least I tighten with spark plug wrench. Can I get the wrench from auto zone? and is it any different then other wrenches?

Now for the shopping part:

DCPR6E (NGK) XU20EPR-U (DENSO) - Standard Spark Plug
DCPR7E (NGK) XU22EPR-U (DENSO) - Extended High Speed Riding Spark Plug

SPARK PLUG GAP: 0.8 – 0.9 mm (0.031 – 0.035 in)

Any recommendation and what I should look for when shopping for the spark plug? Ill try to stop by Auto Zone and look at the box and see where the info is.

Dad never taught me anything about mechanics, so I know the majority of this sounds pretty damn easy and I am probably over complicating the situation. I just bought this bike used and want to make sure that it is in great condition and I dont screw anything up. Just trying to research all I can before I mess with anything.

Thanks Again, Sorry for the Essay

p.s. I talked to the original owner and he said he hadn't switched out the plugs for almost 7k to 9k miles.

The only dumb question is the one not asked.

Well I always thought this was a dumb question..... What would you get if you cross bred a Llama and a Wookie?

Syrus...It's best to remove the plugs when the engine is cold....Aluminum and steel dissipate heat at different rates...It don't take much to screw up the theads in an aluminum head....Also get a set of spark plug sockets...They're special sockets that have a rubber piece inside them to prevent breaking the plugs off....

Hey!!

Thanks everyone for your help! I finally have some time to get to work on it. I opened the garage this afternoon after grabbing a spark plug wrench and some new spark plugs. I tried to pull the rubber covers off the spark plugs but they wouldn't budge. Afraid to pull too hard and mess something up. Do you have to give them a reasonable tug or how do you get those rubber covers off the spark plug so I can screw off the plug?

Also found something that surprised me today. A very small leak. It looked like a mixture of gas and oil. It is coming from the switch near the ignition that you flip when your turning off your bike, riding it, or filling the reserve tank up. I found a very small amount of fluid coming out from it.

Thanks again, for everyones input. I also looked into that oklahoma group. Gonna contact you guys soon as i finish up my beginner riding course. Would love to tag along for a event or two.
