Hello all as you can tell I am new to the forum. (a little history) I recently became a owner of a 05 1300c It was a purchase of opportunity, I was riding a v-star. I got the vtx for under 3000 it has 17000 miles on it the guy how had it before me didn't ride it much it just sit in his front yard baking in the sun. when I looked at it I knew right away this bike probably was not taking very good care of. it was two years out of being highway legal the paint was faded on one side (not bad but it was) and the 700 dollar corbin seat was in just about ruins. he had a battery charger on it and poured some fresh gas into the tank. it started right up and i listened it sounded fine, i rode it rode fine got back to his house checked the oil it was pretty bad asked him what he did as far as maintenance he said he changed the oil right before the last time he rode the bike (two years) so I bought it. the oil was so bad I bought some cheap dino oil and a filter and changed it figured i would run that for a few weeks and do another oil change. I have been reading a lot on here about everything and the cafe members are very helpful and quick to help

with that being said my question after the first oil change I rode the bike every day (just about) there was some ticking. I read on here about the valves so after about 600 miles (that I rode) I tore into it checked valves (within spec) did not adjust, changed engine oil went with rotella t6 and Bosch filter, changed final drive oil, coolant, plugs, and ordered a air filter. put it back together. the bike shifts much better but there is still that tick after the engine gets warm but it sounds like it is coming from the lower part of the motor it is not a loud noise but it is there is that normal or ????? my fear knowing the bike was not loved like it should have been could it be a rod or crank or something that could be catastrophic.

your thought are appreciated

Sounds like you got a good deal. Light ticking is fine and actually good. These engines are a little noisy. No ticking and I would be worried.
Most here end up changing to the K&N filters because they have better air flow and are lifetime filters and can be cleaned and washed and re oiled.

Look for wobble in the steering. Go about 45 mph on a straight road and remove your hands from the bars. As you decelerate, do you get any wobble or shimmy in the steering/bars? If so, this is a good indication that your steering bearings need changed. Doing the steering bearings, fork oil change, and installing new fork springs (if that is in your plan) are best done all at the same time to make it easier.

G'day,

Vinish

Damn, you got a smoking deal! Sounds like you have already done more to it the short time you have owned it than that guy did the whole time he owned it. Keep working on it, you are doing fine. The sewing machine, sounded an awful lot like my bike. It was just a whole lot quieter. If you put a K&N filter on, it magnifies that noise even more. Damn, ride that thing! You got a great deal! Be proud an know you got blessed with a great bike and a wonderful project.

Congratulations on what sounds like a helluva deal. If the sound you're describing is a quiet "clicking", that's normal...even desirable. Depends on how loud it is.

with 10w40 My 1300r and another I rode makes some lower end noise when I am in 1st or second kinda letting the bike rock forward and back when in a parking lot .It makes a noise when idleing on the kickstand but gets quiet when the bike is level.I thought it was oil being swashed by stator spinning ?..but when cruising she is quiet .I use 20w50 syn when temps get and stay above 95 outside. My engine is pretty quiet with the 20w50. A good mechanic said the single crank pin causes the engine noise. It doesnt knock when I get on it hard or cruising so I think he may be right ?.If I had loud pipes I dont think Id hear the noises from the engine......... Have heard many different people say these engine are noisy.....EO

My engine is pretty quiet with the 20w50.
Always Works making them much Quieter.
200F oil thins to noisier level the lower the grade base number.
Microphone test will easily show it resting on the engine.

You hear ticking, but how many valves are ticking? I would check valve clearances so you will know if "all" are ok. Valves properly adjusted will have some light ticking, but right now..you don't know if they "all" are properly adjusted. Wishing you well.

Nice ride.

Check out the Mustang saddle. I love mine. It has a separable pillion so you can dress her solo, or 2 up.

Another low (no) cost mod if you've already got the K&N air filter is to decap the air box. I just did mine last night (it took about 45 minutes 'cuz I'm very detail oriented) and it made a big difference on the performance. oh, the rejetting (Factory Pro stage III) helped it as well. I highly recommend it, if you can. (58 pilot - 220 main - 4 th clip from blunt and no shims - 1 7/8 on A-F)

Ride safe.

Just something to think about!

Recently completed the Clayton Root modification on the exhaust of my 2004 VTX 1300R.:mosh: Surprisingly, I found that not only did the Clayton Root Mod. improve gas mileage slightly, make the bike sound sooooo much better, but it also did away with the sewing machine ticking sound from the engine (sounds like a big boy bike now) and amazingly also greatly reduced the dreaded shifting clunk when going from second gear to first gear. Will miracles never cease..........Oh and BTW could someone loan a spare set of ear plugs to my co-pilot!!!!!:spank:
