I bought my X used with 6700 miles on it. I've had it 2 months and thus far have only put on 250 miles (just got my license this week. Do I need to replace the bearings before 8k miles? That seems to be when a lot of people notice the wobble.

Cruzer Dude, the earlier the better since you will need too; additionally more miles out of your tires if you switch to dynabeads instead of weights on the wheels (search dynabeads, many articles)

Tony, I would guess from what I have heard around $300-400 from a dealer. In your area I bet there are people that would love to do a small tech session and some that have done the replacement that could help you thru it. Last tech session in NC I think they did about 4 bikes. Put the word out for help and I bet someone steps up in the area.

Two things I fully believe in to extend tire life; dynabeads, 2 oz each motorcycle tire (if running car tire (darkside) on the rear then 3 oz there) and inflation to 38-40 pounds pressure. If you run tires at the Honda recommended you might get a little softer ride but 30% or less tire wear, that could be the difference in 13,500 miles vs 9,000. Also you can adjust the ride with the shock settings, I am 250# and sometimes ride with a passenger and I like the 4 setting, a little stiffer but dont' ever bottom out on big bumps. Hope all this helps and welcome to VTX land!!

Challenger: I developed the wobble, (ONLY on decel) a couple of weeks ago...ordered the All Balls bearings. Stopped by my dealer today to ask what they would charge to install them. The service manager looked it up on his computer, said it called for 2.1 hours labor, so the charge would be $155. Going to get it done next week.

My bike a wobble until I checked my front tire. My Avon Venom was cupped badly. When I got the bike the tires were inflated to Honda pressures. Mine is now running 39-41 psi in the front and 38 in the rear. and the cupping is going away on the front. The tires are going to be replaced son with Conti's or Michelins. Check out a Harley if you want to know what a real wobble is, especially in corners....

Rvator97, thank you for the information about what I can expect from the dealership to replace my steering bearing.

I am still getting cupping on my front tire and it is driving me crazy. Last July I replaced my tires with Metzeler ME 880 Marathons. I have been running 38 PSI in the front and 40 PSI in the rear tire since I had them installed and check my tire pressure every week religously. I also went with the dynabeads - 2 oz in front tire, 3 oz in rear tire.

Was doing a visual on my bike before taking off to work the other day and noticed the tell-tale signs of excessive wear on the right side of the front tire! I have 8500 miles on the tires and the rear tire still looks like brand new. Front tire is not holding up so well. It is very worn down thread-wise compared to the rear tire.

Only thing I haven't done to try and alleviate this problem is replace the steering bearing. I will wait until this winter. I hope that cures the problem.

Right side wear isn't normal You need to check your fork tube placement in the trees and replace the fluid in them then follow the directions for axle alignment.

Hi guys, new vtx owner here, 2005 C 18k plus miles, I noticed that whenever I took my hands off the handlebar the bike will start this crazy wobble and wanted to know if this is what you guys are talking about, and if I can fix it myself. Thanks.

That is what the post is about.

$40 set of bearings and a few hours of your time to fix it.

I got my bike new in Feb (2009 1300r 0 miles off the showroom floor). I only got 3000 miles on it and about a month ago when I let my handle bars go at about 45 mph I noticed a wobble in it. My last bike was a 2007 1300r and after about the same mileage it had a wobble to it at slow speeds and I had to put a new front tire on after about 4000 miles. I got a feeling I will have to take advantage of my warranty. If I can think of it I'm going to give the dealer a call tomorrow afternoon and I'll post what he said crazygtr.

Yes, the wobble is usually cause by steering bearing problems (replace with either the 1800 verison roller bearing or "all balls" roller bearinging, a lot of work but can be done by owner with a helper and info on this site), also dynabead for balance and make sure you are running 39-40 psi in the tires. Running the 32 or what reccomended will cause wobble but mostly early tire wear. Finally as Charlie D says above if you are getting one side wear on the tires recheck fork tree placement and axle alignment. All can be done by yourself if you take your time and follow examples/directions in threads on this site.

yeah, What those guys said, Search Death wobble, theirs multiple threads on this topic, the 1300's came with cheap bearings from factory. It's not just a huge coincidence that all the 1300's happen to have bad steering bearings. mine does it from 40-50 mph on decel only. I know it's bad, so i'm just going to replace them before their close to worn out, and before I have a problem because of it.
Mine (1300R) does the same exact thing in that mph range.

I'm also noticing uneven tread wear on the front tire. It's like I'm driving nascar....always turning left. Anyone else see that?

I might have missed reading it, but I haven't seen any mention of rake/trail causing any wobble. Some folks are lowering, changing diameter of tires, changing angles, loading bike in ways that upsets stability.

OK then - replaced the bearing with a couple buddies who had done one successfully. Still have the wobble on decel at right at 50 mph. Now what???

If the tourque is right on the bearrings, and they were installed and seatede all the way. This has been a mistake for some.
Then you need to start looking some where else.
If it is a one time thing, even wind turblance can cause a wobble, but this is usely at higher speeds.
Several diderent things can cause problems like this.
But most of the time, its Hondas cheep a$$ bearings. WAY TO GO HONDA!!!!
