My wife is urging me to buy a Goldwing, but I'm concerned about weight and handling. I had a Vulcan 1500 and traded it for my current X because the Vulcan seemed very top heavy and I was unconfortable around turns with a passenger. I love the X and have not issues with turns with or without passengers. Is there anyone in Cafeland that has or has had both, went from one to the other, that can give me some insight??? I know the Goldwing is heavier, but is it/does it seem top heavy??? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.....

Here's my 2 cents. If you ride with her a lot and both love it. Get a Goldwing. Much more comfortable for two up riding and luxury on long trips. The price will bite you in the butt compared to the X though. Ideal would be to have both, of course.

My opinion if u still have problem with turn with 2 up cause of the weight,, u need to get familiar and comfortable on those turn... That way when u go to goldwing I will not find any issue with it, as u know goldwing is expensive . Goldwing is good ride and its not vtwin more confy than vtx more power too , if u can afford both of them go for it.

He Pmed me and I gave him my Opinons the best I could, However I didn't hit directly on the "top heavy issue"....

Now granted this is an opinion and an Opinion only, I do NOT find the Wing to be top heavy in the least, the balance on the Wing is amazing...of course it's like any other bike you would have to practice on it to get used to tight turns and things of that nature, but just like with any other bike, you will get used to it...I ride this bike like I have any of the others I have owned...and yes the heated hand grips rock :bleh:...LoL...but in all honesty, they are great bikes, I absolutely love mine!!..I sometimes forget that I am on a Wing because it handles like a sportbike :stirpot:......:icon_mrha

I have an 07 1300C and a 2010 GL1800...totaly two different rides. The Goldwing is like riding a sport bike with bags..awesome ride. If you was close..I'd let ya try it out however if you are going to the W.Va. ride in july, I'll be on the wing because I'll be pulling a camper. You can get left over wings for 18-20K. Cornering, turning and hitting those curves is very easy and the bike is well balanced and not top heavy. Warning...if you test ride one....you will want one...lol

Remember that the Goldwing has a horizontally opposed six cylinder engine that lays very low on the bike frame so there could quite reasonably be a lower center of gravity on a Wing than on your typical V-twin like the VTX line.

G'day,

Vinish

The Goldwing 1800's are bigger, more comfy sportbikes...Even the frames are similar to a sportbike, not what you would expect to be the groundwork for the leader of the touring bike world....

And for comparison sake, here's a VTX frame....

I went in to buy a Goldwing and came out with an X. I couldn't see spending at least twice the money. I am just glad I didn't test ride a Goldwing as it may have influenced my decision and made me spend the money. :) What I don't know won't hurt me. YET.

Funny... I just had this convo after lunch with a guy in our building who parks his GW next to my VTX. I would agree with others here.... Given money as no object, the GW for sure. His only complaint is he feels it is a bit clumsy in parking lots..... Of course he has reverse... wth is he bitching about?

I'd love to have a wing but the two problems I have are:
1. I'm too short...at 5'4", I can sit on one with the center stand and not touch the ground, and
2. I can't afford one.
That being said, the electric sign board for the local HD stealership said they has a wing for $3200. I had to see it. It was an '87 (I think) 1100 Aspencade. I actually could fit it and test rode it and they guy told me I could have it for $2600. The only thing that stopped me was I figured my X was a 1300 so I would be losing power and my X could tour as well. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way the I don't think I'd have been riding it much since I'm not getting rid of the X.

That 1100 Aspencade will put a major whippin' on a 1300 (and an 1800) any day of the week...Don't let the CC #'s fool you...Those flat-fours make power in an entirely different way than a V-twin, and have a much higher redline...

I will own a wing some day, I am waiting till I can afford the wing and the X. At which point I will strip the X down, from the tour bike I am making, and change her to a bagger or back to the basics. So in short, get the wing

:patriot:mad:Bassdude404: Really liked those pics comparing the frames. Didn't realize the wing frame was so "substantial" Would love to have a wing but need to save up some more socialist money to get one (good used one). Tks agn....tom

I rode my mom's wing for about a month before she turned it into a trike (it's no fun now that it's a trike) and loved it. The feel is very balanced and friendly feeling. Two up on the wing is no problem and very comfortable. It is really amazing the balance on the wing. If I could only have one, sorry but I would go wing.

Ken, was the one you rode a 1500 or 1800??? I'm in the same position with what seems to be a lot of X'ers... available funds. :( Guess maybe I'll look a little deeper into dollars availibility to see what I can do to get one.
